In essence, these rules were not similar to the laws which would come about later on and known as typical law (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969). Authors explain that the laws "bear little relation to legal theory or practice in the first millennium" (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 196, p.210). The law at issue includes four types of documents which are receipts, contracts, conveyances and court documents (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969). A conveyance is something that refers to the transfer of property (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969). Authors explain that certain parts of the law, that appear ludicrous in nature, are on the books for custom, but there is no evidence that these ridiculous punishments were ever enforced (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969). Authors provide an example of one such punishment: "Thus the guilty party might be required to present a number of white horses to a god, to burn his eldest son, or even to swallow an enormous amount of wool!" (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969, p.211). Again, this was viewed more as a formality or convention than a literal punishment (Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook, 1969). In evaluating whether or not Neo-Assyrian laws are valuable sources of information, or mere propaganda or wishful thinking, the analysis provided by Edwards, Baordman, Bury & Cook (1969) does note that some of the information contained on the books was not true at all. In fact, they were mere laws implemented for the good of the state, or created simply to put something on paper, but the reality of what went on was different.
