globe. The Center of Immigration Studies relates that over 26 million immigrants have come to the US just since 1970 (Moua, et al 2002). These immigrants face multiple barriers to
assimilation, but ultimately many of them become naturalized citizens of their adopted country. The process of naturalization is more difficult for immigrants who are older, have limited educational background and
do not speak English. This examination of the naturalization process focuses on the example of a Syrian woman who has been reunited with her family, has limited educational background and
is over 55 years of age. The Naturalization Process "Naturalization" is the "process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national" (USCIS, 2008a). The
general requirements to become a naturalized American citizen are: * a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States; * residence in a particular USCIS District
prior to filing; * an ability to read, write, and speak English; * a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government; * good moral character; * attachment to the
principles of the U.S. Constitution; and, * favorable disposition toward the United States (USCIS, 2008a). As the third requirement in this list indicates, unless there is a physical
reason why they cannot do so, all applicants for naturalized United States citizenship are required to speak, understand and write simple English. However, there are exemptions to this general rule.
