they are considered subversive and unflattering to the Vietnamese people. However, what Huongs book depicts is the very real ugliness of war, and how one searches for meaning, even in the middle of prolonged suffering. Quan is the main character in the book. He is very young and has been so influenced and brainwashed by communist slogans that he rushes off to war, eager to earn fame and fortune. This part of the novel is very much reminiscent of the Red Badge of Courage. By the time Quan has served ten years in the army he finds himself sickened and despondent about the realities of war. However, since hes been a soldier since he was eighteen, he can think of no other life to turn to. During this time, his commander sends him on a mission to retrieve one of their soldiers who has gone mad on the battlefield and rather than fight continues to hurl himself into barbed wire fencing. Setting out on this mission becomes a journey of discovery for Quan. As he makes his way to the front Quan relives scenes from his childhood when things were more innocent and life had hope. The author then takes such scenes and imposes upon them the grim reality and harshness of war and the brutality of his life now. Two scenes in particular tend to stay in ones mind long after it is read. At one point he is in the jungle and is offered some food by the company cook. As he stews the large chunks of meat in the stew he brings up the hand of a Orangutan. Quan attempts to eat, but cannot. He spits out the stew. Later, he meets a wild woman in the jungle. She smells of death and is responsible ...
