for most people is their marriage and the birth of their children. In the students case, one of the most life altering events occurred shortly before the birth of her first child. Her husband was killed by a drunk driver. As a result the students whole life-picture was altered. The picture no longer included her husband playing catch with his son in the backyard, having a father that could watch him graduate high school. No longer did the picture include spending the golden years of the students life with the love of her youth. To add insult to injury, most statistics suggest that the drunk driver that claimed her husbands life and robbed her son of a father saw little to no jail time. The students personal experience with this matter brought the reality of the imbalance in the United States where drunken driving laws are concerned. On a national news broadcast recently it was stated that while harsher penalties are on the books, most officers do not charge the perpetrator with the fullest extent at their discretion. This also applies to the judges who, at their discretion, may sentence someone from ten days to a year. Consider that someone that purposely kills someone with a gun receives a life sentence and serves mandatory long-term sentences. When someone decides to pull the trigger, they have made a conscious decision to place someone in danger. A stray bullet kills with as much lethal force as a bullet that was intended for someone. In the case of the drunk driver one cannot help but think that the same logic applies.
