is difficult to arrive at a definitive conclusion on NAFTA. In Texas, there is a strong anti-NAFTA sentiment that evolves primarily from
the fact that many of NAFTAs promises have never occurred (Weintraub 1). Specifically, it was expected that an "increase in Mexican exports and goods and services" would result in a
decline in the flow of undocumented workers entering the US illegally (i.e., "that we would import goods, not people")(Weintraub 1). Rather than delivering this benefit, many argue that it is
the reverse that has occurred, as there is a plethora of statistics to support the position that NAFTA has failed to live up to the expectations of its early supporters.
In the 1990s, NAFTA was expected to "create hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs, turn the slight deficit with Mexico to a
$10 billion annual trade surplus, and eliminate illegal immigration" (Engardio, et al 57). Rather than producing these benefits, in 2007, the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico exceeded $74 billion and
the U.S. has lost roughly 3 million manufacturing jobs over the last decade, as illegal immigration continues (Engardio, et al 57). However, there is considerable debate as to whether these
dismissal statistics are directly caused by NAFTA. While some job loss is due to Chinas dramatic increases in exports, it seems indisputable
