Initiative for Community Outreach; it has an entire unit on mummies. What are mummies? Most people immediately think of ancient Egypt when they think of mummies, but many cultures
throughout the world have practiced mummification, with the result that mummies have been found from "Greenland to China to the Andes Mountains of South America" ("What are Mummies?"). A mummy
is the "body of a person ... that has been preserved after death" ("What are Mummies?"). After death, the body normally breaks down due to the action of bacteria, which
consumes the soft tissues and organs, leaving only the bones. Mummification dries out the body so that bacteria do not form and the entire corpse is preserved; in some cases,
the mummification is so skillful that its possible to recognize the persons face ("What are Mummies?"). What is the process of mummification? Mummification is literally the drying out of the
body; it can occur naturally-in the desert, its sometimes possible to find desiccated carcasses of small animals that are literally dried out from the heat. Since its the culture most
often thought of in this connection, well explore the ancient Egyptian method of mummification. It was an expensive process, and a very long one, taking approximately 70 days to finish
