However, in each instance, the audience is fully aware of the complications. It is the audiences awareness of misperception that gives the play its comic and dramatic effects. This is evident in the several plot lines that make-up the play. (To the student: As the opening paragraph suggests, this writer feels that the question "Are there assets or liabilities of fooling an audience?" is not applicable because Shakespeare is careful to keep the audience informed on what is going on, i.e., they are not at any point "fooled." However, as discussed below, perception or "noting" is the principal device used in creating the plays plot). Early on Shakespeare establishes that there is friendly antagonism between Beatrice and Benedict. Both avow their intention to never marry in Act 1. Benedict declares "That a woman conceived me, I thank her; that she brought me up, I likewise give her," but he would rather be hit in the head than marry -- "I will live a bachelor" (I.1.241-249). Likewise, Beatrice vows that she will never marry. However, the audience can see from the beginning that there is an attraction between the two. When their friends conspire to make each one believe that the other loves them, the perception of both Beatrice and Benedict changes, awakening them to the attraction that they previously denied.
