being proposed, and Republican and Democratic lawmakers are suggesting possible solutions to reform an ailing healthcare system. The average person in the United States spends at least $7,000 annually on
healthcare (Snow, 2009, p. 275). This amount is about twice as much as citizens in other developed nations spend on their healthcare (Snow, 2009). However, despite the cost,
in the opinion of David B. Snow Jr. (2009), CEO of Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a New Jersey pharmacy services company created to provide affordable patient care, "Our quality of
care is no better" (p. 275). Because the health status of Americans and their life expectancies are also similar to their counterparts in other developed countries, they are essentially
paying twice as much for their services, but not receiving comparable care quality to justify their additional expenditures (Snow, 2009). According to 2009 statistics, approximately 46 million Americans are
without any type of health insurance - either individual or through their employers - and another 35 million have insufficient coverage for the medical care they require (Baucus, 2009).
