is the story of one mans desire to be more than he is, a comedy involving the ridiculous nature of the Bourgeois society, a society that Moliere knew well, and a story that was meant perhaps as social commentary and good natured fun. The following paper examines this particular play and the time in which it was written. Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme This play was written in the 17th century, as were all of Molieres plays. It was apparently written in the year 1670 (Muller). In terms of the specifics of this time period we note that drama in France, during the Renaissance, was very much influenced by Roman and Italian works (Fact Monster). But, just prior to the 17th century France altered its perspective in its unique sense of drama and productions that offered a "romantic reaction to classical dullness" emerged through the work of Alexandre Hardy, "Frances first professional playwright" (Fact Monster). This particular trend, however, was halted by Cardinal Richelieu, who was a man determined to direct the society of France and insisted on more classic forms of drama. This is about the time when Moliere emerged and began presenting his comedies which truly, and obviously, went against this classical style (Fact Monster). In political and social perspective it is noted that "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Would-Be Gentleman), another of his masterpieces. It is claimed to be particularly directed against Colbert, the minister who had condemned his old patron Fouquet" (Wikipedia). The comedy was quite popular and it was this style that was further developed to create a unique French production.
