Descent from the Cross. Last Judgment, Fresco (1534-1541), is a masterpiece that was created on the on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in The Vatican, Rome, Italy
by Michelangelo (Rex & Olteanu PG). The time during which this work was done was the Renaissance. Descent from the Cross (1525-1528) is an oil painting that was
done on wood in the Capponi Chapel, Santa Felicita, Florence, Italy by Jacopo Pontormo (Kren & Marx PG). The time during which this work was also done was the
Renaissance period, but it was considered early Mannerism. A refinement of the stylistic principles and techniques associated with the Renaissance can be
observed from the second half of the fifteenth century onward. Michelangelo was one of the great masters of the High Renaissance in Italy. Michelangelo was not only a
painter; he was also a sculptor, an architect, and a poet (Fichner-Rathus 3-530). Pontormo was a representative of early Mannerism, using most of its stylistic
principles. Mannerism was the name to the period toward the end of the Renaissance and before the beginning of the seventeenth century. Observation and emulation of nature was
the rule during the Renaissance, but this concept changed with the period of Mannerism (Fichner-Rathus 3-530). The two paintings were both created in the 1500s,
yet the styles are markedly different. Michelangelos Last Judgment shouts with the pictorial method used by Michelangelo who used vivid coloring. Michelangelo used blues, reds, and flesh tones to
create his masterpiece, Last Judgment, which was in oil on wood. Jacopo Pontormos Descent from the Cross was done in odd hues in oil on wood.
