However, activists who want marijuana legal for medicinal use claim that both sides argue over things that have little to do with the real issue, which is that sick people need the drug (Collier, 2007). It is a heated debate. Marijuana, a drug that many believe is not as bad as alcohol when used recreationally in moderation, is still something that the government can control. It imposes stiff fines for possession or sale. Alcohol has been legal since the end of prohibition. However, marijuana is not legal and so the debate on legalization continues. In some way, it is about government control and fears about addiction rather than worries about the effects of marijuana. Although there are many who want to see marijuana completely legalized, others say that they only want it legal for medical use. This makes sense and is true for many drugs. Hospitals use morphine and Oxycontin for example, but these are abused drugs. At the same time, these are not just street drugs. They have a purpose. Further, it is ridiculous to even compare marijuana and morphine as the former is hardly dangerous or physically addictive. Of course, there is some debate about the safety of marijuana. Curtis claims that the FDA will never sanction the smoking of marijuana as a proven treatment as pot itself has carcinogens ("Medical Marijuana," 2004). In fact, it has more carcinogens than does tobacco ("Medical Marijuana," 2004). It is hard to argue that something that is harmful to health should be legalized. At the same time, once again, there is argument that if substances like morphine, codeine, Oxycontin, Vicodin and so forth can be used for medical reasons, medicinal marijuana should be legal ...
