The following paper examines the pros and cons of legalizing medical marijuana and then offers a personal opinion as it relates to the benefits that could come from legalizing medical marijuana. Medical Marijuana: Pros and Cons One of the first topics of controversy involves the healthful benefits of using medical marijuana. On one hand many professionals claim there is a lot of research that indicates "marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS -- or by the harsh drugs sometimes used to treat them" (Medical Marijuana ProCon.org). On the other side are many who claim that there is not enough research that indicates this stance (Medical Marijuana ProCon.org). They argue that there are more reliable, and more thoroughly tested, drugs that do the same thing (Medical Marijuana ProCon.org). Interestingly enough, there are many who argue against legalization of medical marijuana because enough tests have been done and that research has indicated foundations argued in the following: "Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs, and immune system. It impairs learning and interferes with memory, perception, and judgment. Smoked marijuana contains cancer-causing compounds and has been implicated in a high percentage of automobile crashes and workplace accidents" (Medical Marijuana ProCon.org). However, others claim that the amount of marijuana normally smoked, or ingested, is so little that there has never been any relationship between cancers and smoking marijuana, nor have there been records of detrimental health risks in users (Medical Marijuana ProCon.org).
