dog fighting is just one more example of the continual decline of the American publics own mores. The media provides what the American public wants to see and read. Michael Vick committed an illegal act and was caught. He was also a popular Atlanta Falcons football player. The act Vick was arrested and tried for, however, was particularly shocking, shocking at least to those in the American public that were na?ve to the horrors associated with dog fighting. The media recognized the shock value of the story and the pull it held for their respective audiences. Consequently, a significant portion of media resources was devoted to providing what the American public wanted. While the specifics of the coverage varied somewhat between the print media (more specifically the Atlanta-Journal Constitution), the electronic media (as exemplified in this case by ESPN), and Internet sources like CNN.com; the gist of the coverage was the same. Vick was presented as a very bad boy. He was also, however, presented as an irresistibly attractive bad boy. Despite the fact that Vick was involved in an activity that was abhorrent to most, despite the fact that he was personally responsible for the deliberate mistreatment and deaths of other living and breathing beings; the news sources noted above were all guilty of capitalizing on Vicks magnetic persona, on his status as a sports figure, on his wealth, and even on his physical attractiveness. Each, after all, was a definite drawing card for the American viewer. Each could be counted on to bring in ad revenue. That, after all, is the focus of much news coverage of the day.
