STRONG-WILLED AND DEFIANT Drawn to the "plainest looking man in Springfield" (Edsall, 1995, p. 24), Mrs. Lincoln was a spitfire from the very beginning of their relationship. Her wartime ethics were highly questionable in the eyes of all who believed that she was wrong in diverting funds for Civil War veterans to freed slaves; however, she was not about to stand still while people were being treated worse than animals. "Slammed by the newspapers as vain, egotistical, extravagant and tyrannical" (Holland, 1996, p. PG), Lincoln stood strong against her opposition. Several personal accounts have been circulated over the years that attest to the fact that Mary Todd Lincoln was not the most pleasant person to be around, with her own maid being just one of many who have taken the opportunity to state their interpretations. "Marys mood swings might have been rooted in her addiction to paregoric, a common tonic which contained opium. Screaming demonically one day, the next day Mary could be a caring friend" (White, 1995, p. PG). This manic/depressive-type behavior did not serve her well when President Lincoln was gunned down directly in her presence.
