SA138MaW.rtf I. Introduction Karl Marx and Max Weber have a lot in common. The classic sociologists have been compared many times, and on a variety of subjects from anomie and alienation to their views on class and social status. Bureaucracy is another pet peeve of Webers that Marx also took issue with, especially as it concerned capitalist organizations. Yet, certain subjects that have become issues of late-education and religion-are things that concerned these men who contemplated how societies behave. In looking at education and religion, many take issue with the fact that they are separate entities. Prayer in school is of course something that is desired by the religious right. Today, while conservative forces within the schools try to sneak their religion into the context of secular life, others try to teach their own brand of religion that some have seen as blasphemous. For instance, some have construed condom distribution as an attack on religion and dubbed the people who support it as leftist radicals who preach new ageism. Indeed, new ageism is part of the dominant culture and so it is sometimes hard to differentiate religion and mainstream ideation. While the ideas about the relationship between religion and education are interesting, they are concepts in their own right. They are also each concepts that both Marx and Weber had much to discuss.
