it was time to learn more about the environment on the planet Mars to determine whether it could support life, or if that was only the fodder of science fiction novels (Knab, 2005). In 1997, it created Sojourner as the rover for its Pathfinder mission, and opted to incorporate some of its designs in a new twin-rover project scheduled to begin in 2003 (Mars Exploration Rover, 2004). At NASAs Pasadena, California based Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), landers and cruise stages were developed that included Sojourner-like six wheels for each, "rocker-bogie" suspension to enable the rovers to drive over challenging terrain, rechargeable batteries, and protective radioisotope heater units to shield the batteries from the frigid nights on Mars (Mars Exploration Rover, 2004). The rover names Spirit and Opportunity were chosen from approximately 10,000 entries in a student essay contest and were designed to carry onboard camera, computer, and communications equipment (Mars Exploration Rover, 2004). Each has installed panoramic and microscopic cameras, robotic arm, and three types of spectrometers (Moessbauer, miniature thermal emission, and alpha particle X-ray (Mars Exploration Rover, 2004). At a weight of 384 pounds (174 kilograms), the Spirit and Opportunity are massive, each weighing 17 times as much as Pathfinder, and are also more than twice as long (5.2 feet or 1.6 meters) and tall (4.9 feet or 1.5 meters(Mars Exploration Rover, 2004). Floridas Cape Canaveral launched Spirit on June 10, 2003, and on the night of July 7, the Opportunity rover was launched after successfully repairing its cork insulation defect (Mars Exploration Rover, 2004).
