This is then known as the target market. The target market may be the personal who is actually buying the product or service, or they may be those who are
influential in the purchase decision. In this example we are looking at washing detergent, and need to determine the market for this product. We are not given many any
details of the type of detergent so we will make some assumptions. Detergent is a household product, and as such it is likely to be bought in the usual weekly
or monthly shopping list. Most shopping is undertaken by women, and washing detergent is not one that is likely to be of much interest to men, as such we have
an immediate reduction of potential targeting. Many products cannot be targeted as simply, but this is an easy product. This does not mean men do not buy the product, only
that when they do they are a minority purchaser. The next stage may be to look at the family background. The use of detergent is seen in all families,
as it is an essential item, people do not want to wear dirty clothes. The issue is not where it is used, but where it is used mostly. Many students
or younger people may make use of parent to do the laundry, alternately, especially if in rented accommodation, they may make use of a local launderette. This indicates lower usage
of detergent, and possible use of the detergent machines in laundrettes. If we are assuming that this is a detergent that is used in washing machines it is also
likely to be those who are setting up or who have set up home that are likely to have a washing machine. Therefore we start with family units, these may
