To look at the difference between management and leadership we need to consider the roles of a manager and a leader. The role of a manager is seen as one of managing people, logistical concerns ensuring the right people are in the right place at the right time, performing the correct functions and taking responsibly for that task. However, in the modern world, with increased employee rights, more employee awareness and the recognised need for motivation to increase productivity, we may argue that todays managers also need to be leaders. The only variable may be seen in the style of leadership that is used and how it fits in with the needs of the position and the organisation. If we consider the role of a manager, we can also argue that this is simply another term for a leader, for example, we may have an office manager, even in an bureaucratic organisation there will need to be some level of leadership skills at this level. When we reach managing director level, these skills, arguably, need to increase, however we can also argue the opposite. It is at this stage delegation is possible, relying on the leadership of well appointed subordinates. To begin this decision in earnest we need to look at how we may see different types of leadership that can be seen to emerge. Druker (Hasselbain et al, 1997) argues that leaders will have followers.
