Although Macbeths ambition initially appeared to be typical of a soldiers need to succeed and receive recognition from his leader, it would eventually take over his life, obliterate his conscience, and transform his character from hero to villain. Macbeth was clearly his own worst enemy, but there were others in his life who contributed to the orchestration of his downfall. The witches and his equally ambitious wife fed his ego and whetted his appetite for power. The tragedy of Macbeth manifested itself in his flawed sense of values and illustrated how susceptible human nature is to evil influences. Lord and Lady Macbeth are united in marriage and in their collective desire to secure greatness for themselves. Macbeth is a loyal soldier of Scotlands King Duncan, and because she is not preoccupied with child-rearing - apparently whatever children they had died as babies - Lady Macbeth is fixated upon furthering her husbands career by any means necessary. When Duncan honors Macbeths battlefield prowess with the prestigious title of Thane of Cawdor, one would think that would be enough for the power-seeking couple. However, this title would represent the seeds of Macbeths downfall, sown during supernatural encounter with a trio of witch siblings (described in the text as the weird sisters), who issue this prediction to the Thane: THIRD WITCH. All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!... FIRST WITCH. Lesser than Macbeth, and greater. SECOND WITCH. Not so happy, yet much happier. THIRD WITCH. Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none. / So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!
