racism in this country as a first-hand participant. While it is true that he was the educated son of an educated black minister, the circumstances of the time in which he grew up could not have done anything other than expose him to the impacts of racism. He experienced having to use a separate door to gain access to public areas, he experienced the Jim Crow signs that forbade blacks to enter, he experienced the back seats of the buses, he experienced the separate water fountains, he experienced exclusion from many thing and facilities which whites took for granted. He also experienced the feeling of inferiority which whites so adequately passed on to blacks of the day. He knew of the lynchings which occurred if a black man dared even meet the eye of a white female. He knew of that these times could change. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of a time when he and other blacks would be treated equal and not be judged solely on the basis of the color of their skin. To some degree his dreams have been met. Segregation is illegal, there are no longer separate facilities for blacks and whites, there are no longer separate schools, and separate laws. Blacks are now free to intermingle, even intermarry, with whites. These changes are true in one respect, the legalities of the issue, but unfortunately they are not true in another, social enforcement of the issue. To a large degree what is acceptable and what is not is reflected not through law but in social acceptance or rejection of an issue. All things are not equal.
