collaborator was Electric Light Orchestra leader and fellow Traveling Wilburys band mate Jeff Lynne. Petty and Lynne wrote the first track for the album entitled Full Moon Fever in a single day, and Petty recalls the song only took another day or two to record (Petty & Zollo, 2005). "Free Fallin" had an eclectic sound and feel of the late 1960s psychedelic era, when bands like The Byrds and The Doors that performed songs with highly interpretive lyrics were popular. According to Petty, the record company at first was reluctant to release "Free Fallin" as a single "because they didnt think anyone outside of Southern California would relate to it" (Petty & Zollo, 2005, p. 214). Petty, however, responded, "No, youre wrong, they will" (Petty & Zollo, 2005, p. 214). They certainly did, and "Free Fallin" has become one of Pettys most well-known and oft-played songs. While the song has become a popular youth anthem of first love, Pettys seemingly mainstream song may well have contained within its structure left-wing political and social messages.
