This parable was His response to the Pharisees who questioned him about His disciples eating and drinking instead of fasting and praying as did the disciples of John and the Pharisees. In effect, Christ was asking the Pharisees why His disciples should fast when the Messiah was right there with them (Sequeira, n.d.). The reader needs to remember that in that time, there were only two materials for clothing, wool and cotton (Sequeira, n.d.). When they were laundered, they both shrunk, especially the wool, and the color faded. Even tough we have pre-shrunk synthetic materials today, we all know that after several washings, the color fades. If we wear out an elbow of a shirt or jacket, we cannot just cut the piece out and sew in a new piece. They wont match. Further, if the material shrinks, the patch will also shrink until it eventually tears out Christ is trying to tell the people that the old and the new do not match, they are not compatible (Sequeira, n.d.). "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old" (Luke 5:36). Jesus continues the lesson by discussing wineskins. If you put new wine in old skins, "the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined" (Luke 5:37). The people used goatskin and sheepskin for their containers (Sequeira, n.d.). As the wine fermented in a new skin, the skin would expand but when it was emptied, the skin did not shrink back to its original size, instead, it just dried (Sequeira, n.d.).
