Existing research has identified specific areas in which academic administrators should excel, and subsequent research has identified both professional competencies and professional attitudes that are essential to the leadership in the community college setting (Townsend and Bassoppo-Moyo, 1997). Though research in the 1990s suggested the application of competencies in the hiring of school leaders at the community college level, the need for this kind of leadership has expanded tremendously in the past decade. Increasingly, college trustee boards are recognizing that the transformation of the community college setting and its growing importance are directly linked to the leadership of these schools. Seeking and securing transformative leaders who have the capacity to adapt the educational direction of schools in relation to the changing needs of communities and learners is an essential part of the progression of these institutions (Plinske and Packard, 2010). Plinske and Packard (2010) related the challenges that have emerged in the last decade in seeking out and retaining highly professional college presidents, and have defined specific characteristics and competencies that they value in individuals vying for positions of leadership in the community college.
