tells us where we are and when; in the case of Shakespeares tragedy of young love, were in Verona, Italy, in the 1500s. There are many things in the setting
of the play that are important, but one of the most interesting themes, and one Shakespeare used extensively, is that of light and dark. Discussion There are so many references
to light and dark in the play that its dizzying. Of course, the metaphors are lovely as well. the play is apparently set in the spring, since there is a
reference to the Capulets ball that says "At my poor house look to behold this night / ... / When well-apparelld April on the heel / Of limping winter treads
..." (I.ii.24, 27-28). April is a perfect month in which to set a tragic love story, since it has all the conventional associations of spring, young love, and beginnings.
The first time we hear about Romeo, its in terms of darkness. His father is looking for him, and says that he stays in his rooms, "Shuts up his windows,
locks fair daylight out, / And makes himself an artificial night" (I.i.139-140). He is a tragic figure from the very beginning as he is already associated with darkness. His father
