are arguing that any embargoes on Cuba are not helping anyone, except perhaps Castro, and that in order for the two nations to move forward and prosper these embargoes should be lifted. However, clearly there are those who feel the embargoes are quite necessary because of Castro and his regime, a regime that violates many human rights and is essentially communist. But, at the same time the United States does a great deal of business with China and they are clearly less than democratic and/or humane in their dealings. With these things in mind the following paper first examines the embargoes placed on Cuba and then illustrates perspectives concerning the lifting of embargoes on Cuba. The Embargo The embargoes have been in place against Cuba for more than 40 years. There have been trade embargoes and travel embargoes, all in an effort to crush Castro or strain his regime enough so that he will change or step down. One author notes that, "the U.S. has imposed an economic embargo against Cuba in an attempt to topple Fidel Castro" (Farrell, 2005; NA). the trade embargoes were then further strengthened when the Cold War ended in the hopes that without the Soviet Union Cuba would feel even more pressure to succumb to the United States and their ideals (Farrell, 2005; NA). The, "President George W. Bush moved to further isolate the Caribbean nation during the 2004 Presidential election campaign in a bid to appeal to Floridas large Cuban-American community" (Farrell, 2005; NA). Interestingly enough, many Cuban-Americans do not want to see any embargoes lifted.
