Its welcoming senior citizen and disabled greeters and everyday low prices are extremely friendly to middle and low-income families, many of whom consider Wal-Mart one-stop shopping because it economically meets their consumer needs by providing everything from clothing to groceries. So staggering is Wal-Marts influence on the international retail industry that it also has a tremendous effect upon the American economy. As gas prices continue to rise and consume a larger portion of household budgets, not as many people can shop as often at Wal-Mart. When Wal-Mart fails to make a quarterly profit, the trickle-down impact affects everyone both I the United States and overseas. If big brother is watching us as George Orwell alleged in his futuristic novel, 1984, than he must be the ghost of Sam Walton because the Goliath of a conglomerate he founded - which grew from a regional chain of Arkansas discount stores back in 1962 to the number one American retailer by 1990 - somehow affects each person living today. Wal-Mart appears to embody the ultimate American success story. It has been described as "the darling of Wall Street" and was declared "most admired company" in 2003 by the influential financial publication Forbes magazine (DiNovella 44). Patronage from its massive low-income customer base has propelled Wal-Mart into "a powerhouse" without peer; with generated annual sales of $256.3 billion, it surpasses Microsoft, Target, Home Depot, Kroger, and Costco combined (Sellers 40).
