impressive civil leaders. Gandhi is inspirational from a number of perspectives. Among the most prominent of these, however, is his focus on helping all of humanity work together as equals. In "Peace: The Words and Inspiration of Mahatma Gandhi" Desmond Tutu points out that Gandhi exemplifies the concept of "ubuntu", a concept synonymously referred to by Tutu as "me we" which in its simplest form can be translated to mean that a person is a person through other peoples. In other words, all of humanity is interlinked and what is good for the whole is good for the individual. Gandhis life work, in fact, revolved around the concept that humans were naturally cooperative and helpful because we actually need one another (Tutu, 2007). Otherwise, if we had allowed violence and hate to take the place of cooperation and respect, then we would have become extinct long ago (Tutu, 2007). Gandhi, as might be expected, had to work diligently against some of the less than positive aspects of human behavior as well. Whether we want to acknowledge it or not such things as hate and violence are human tendencies that fall alongside the more admirable qualities. These qualities, in fact, can be credited with the less praiseworthy aspects of human history. While on the one hand Gandhis concentration on the better of the human qualities and minimization of the lesser of these qualities could be viewed as a weakness, he proved time and time again to have the strength to overcome that weakness. Gandhi, in fact, worked his entire life fighting against many of lifes unacceptable atrocities so he certainly wasnt blind to the human qualities that caused those atrocities. His ...
