Transformation leadership is based on these assumptions: people will follow a person who inspires them, a person with vision and passion can achieve great things and the way to get things done is by injecting enthusiasm and energy (Syque, 2004). These are found in Kouzes and Posner list. Transformational leaders model, they lead the charge, they do it first; they inspire a shared vision because they capture the attention and spur the imagination; they are energetic and enthusiastic, and they are completely committed to the vision (Syque, 2004; Kouzes and Posner, 2002). This being said, the same leadership style is not effective in all situations. For example, there are staff members who prefer a more directive style with instructions and directions about what to do but there are not many instances where any staff member at any level needs to be told how to do it. The leader needs to be able to switch styles based on the situation. The primary style of leadership will always be participatory in one way or another, however. We are all very much aware that employees, regardless of position, need to feel valued and they need to feel some control over their own work lives. Models that promote empowerment, involvement, responsibility, accountability and autonomy will always be favored over any other style.
