There are a variety of different levels and stages associated with moral development which, according to these authors, are distinct in terms of their influences and approaches. In this way, it is interesting to see just how these levels and stages operate as insight into this matter leads to insight in many others, such as how to influence behaviors in children, etc. Conventional Level of Morality Laurence Kohlberg is best known for his research in the area of moral codes and his research has centered on how people develop such codes. Basically, Kohlberg discovered that people spend their lives learning about morality and undergoing the process of moral growth, and this begins when we are born and continues until the day that we die. He asserted that each stage of moral development is built upon each other, and that the stages become progressively complex as we mature and evolve in terms of our morality and our understanding of it. The following are the basic moral stages as he defines them: * Level I: Preconventional Morality (age 4 - 10) - This is when moral value resides in what the person needs and wants for himself (Laurence Kohlberg, 2002). * Level II: Conventional Morality (age 10 - 13) - This is when moral values result from performing good deeds or right roles, maintaining the convention order and in pleasing others (Laurence Kohlberg, 2002). * Level III: Post-Conventional Morality (adolescence - adulthood) - This is when moral values reside in principles, which means they are separate from the person but they enforce them and ...
