to never have her predictions believed. As this indicates humanity has always been fascinated by the idea that the future could be determined. Economic forecasters examine production figures, national imports and exports, to determine the future of the economy. Weather forecasters study high and low atmospheric pressure areas. What if scientists could predict the future -- tell people precisely when an earthquake was coming; or, if an asteroid or comet was on a path to collide with the Earth. As Stephen Hawking (2002) points out, it is part of human nature to want to make sense out of the bewildering natural world, to find out the "nature of the universe," and this has been an occupation of humanity since its earliest beginnings. The following discussion will examine two ways in which scientists have attempted to explain the universe -- Laplacian Determinism and Quantum Determinism. Both of these theories have, like Cassandra, postulated the possibility of predicting the future. However, in order to understand how these theories evolved, it is first necessary to examine what led up to the current science on this subject. Historical Background During the seventeenth century, the Western world underwent a scientific revolution, which included Sir Isaac Newtons development of calculus and the laws of classical mechanics (Bradley, 2002). From this point in history onward, scientists viewed the universe from a distinctly different perspective from those that had previously been held. Due to the advent of Newtonian physics, astronomers could now determine the orbits and movements of the planets, the moon and the stars. By simply applying a handful of mathematical equations, the secrets of the solar system became known to science (Bradley, 2002). As this suggests, it seemed to many that the secrets of the universe were opening up before the reasoning ...
