Land surveying technology has progressed leaps and bounds from that employed in those first surveys in Wisconsin and other remote lands. Today we have access to a multitude of technological marvels that make surveying, surveying either in our biggest cities or the more remote regions of the state, a much more easily accomplished feat. In many cases jobs that required weeks worth of man hours can now be accomplished in a few days by one or two men teams. Geographical information systems, systems featuring ground positioning systems (GPS) in particular, are at the heart of the technological developments that are revolutionizing surveying. Surveying needs in Wisconsin are diverse to say the least. Everything from construction projects in suburbs to road development to the mapping and management of ecologically sensitive lands benefits from the improvements that have been noted in surveying technology. The incorporation of Geographic Information System (GIS) software into natural resource management is of particular note. In an effort to map sensitive lands and to oversee their protection everyone from government entities to consultants to private developers are utilizing the latest advancements in surveying technology. As will be elaborated on below, practically every resource manager is now familiar with the terms GIS and GPS and the capabilities the technology allows.
