this paper, well examine the California court system (which is the largest in the nation). Like most other state court systems, the California court system has three "levels." Cases slated for trial enter the superior courts first. Before 1998, the first level of the trial system consisted of superior and municipal courts (Fact Sheet - California Judicial Branch). However, in 1998, voters approved a constitutional amendment permitting judges in each county to combine superior and municipal courts into a single court system, which handles all case types (Fact Sheet - California Judicial Branch). By February 2001, all judges throughout the state voted to unify their trial courts to streamline the services and save taxpayer dollars (Fact Sheet - California Judicial Branch). If a defendant isnt happy with a lower court ruling, he/she can take it to the next level, the Courts of Appeal. There are six appellate districts throughout the state, and the legislature has constitutional authority to create more (Fact Sheet - California Judicial Branch). The Supreme Court of California, the states highest court, is the court of last resort, as its decisions are binding on all other California courts (Fact Sheet - California Judicial Branch). Like the higher-level courts in other states, the Supreme Court of California can either affirm (support) or repeal the decision made on the lower court level - but then the case returns to that lower court for further deliberation.
