So writes Michael Kingston in a provocative essays about a change to California law. This paper discusses Kingstons essay in detail. Discussion Kingston wrote about the change to California law that forbids using "pets" or "companion animals" for food. Specifically, the new law makes it a misdemeanor to possess, import, sell, buy, give away or accept "any carcass or part of any carcass of any animal traditionally or commonly kept as a pet or companion" with the intent of using the animal for food, whether the user is the person cited or another person (Kingston). The second part of the statute is almost exactly the same, except that it forbids the killing of such an animal for food, as opposed to dealing with the carcass (Kingston). Since the use of companion animals for food is a practice restricted almost entirely to the Vietnamese-American community, Kingston wonders if the law is a racist measure aimed more at them as a distinct culture within American society than as a measure to protect animals. He makes some very strong arguments that the new law is nothing more than bigotry and racial hatred in action. First, the law has loopholes in it, so that while it is illegal to eat cats and dogs, rabbits are not thus protected, even though they are increasingly popular as pets, because they are part of an "agricultural industry" (Kingston). The thing that is most interesting here is that Vietnamese dont tend to eat rabbits-but Europeans do. Could it be, Kingston asks, that we dont object to people eating rabbits because we are familiar with the culture that follows this practice; in fact, most Americans are descended from Europeans (Kingston).
