There can be little doubt that Shakespeare was an unabashed monarchist; after all, he was not about to bite the hand that was feeding him. However, as he approached the twilight of his career, William Shakespeare took one last look at kingship and its importance in his next-to-last play, The Winters Tale, which contains the quintessential Shakespearean dramatic elements of suspicion, jealousy, rage, and guilt, but also candidly examines the issue of kings, heirs and their relationship with their subjects. King Leontes of Sicilia seemed to have it all - a lovely wife and pregnant wife, Hermoine, and a young son (and heir), Maximillius. He was a most hospitable host and enjoyed entertaining his boyhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia. However, when Polixenes needed to return to Leontes, much to the Sicilian kings displeasure, he reconsiders after Hermoine implores him to stay on her husbands behalf. But the jealous Leontes becomes convinced Hermoine and Polixenes are having an affair and even questions the paternity of his wifes unborn child, claiming, "With that shes big with; for tis Polixenes / Has made thee swell thus" (II.i.78-79). He plots to have the Bohemian king poisoned, but Polixenes manages to flee Sicilia unharmed and return to the safety of his homeland. As for Hermoine, Leontes treats her as if she were one of his wayward subjects (which she, in fact, was). He banishes his wife to prison to await trial, refusing to allow her to speak in her own defense. The king then dispatches the oracle of Delphi to uncover the truth, or so he says.
