Discussion Government: Alfred was born in 849, the fifth son of Ethelwulf and his queen Osburh; he came to the throne in 871, at the height of the West-Saxon and Mercian struggle against the invading Danes (Taaffe). By the end of that year, Alfred had achieved a peace, probably by buying off the Danes (Taaffe). Wessex was peaceful for several years until the Danes attacked again in 875; further attacks followed in 876 and 877 and in 878 "came the great invasion under Guthrum" (Taaffe). The Danes were successful for several months, but Alfred finally defeated the invaders, and the kingdom knew peace for 15 years (Taaffe). However, the Danes invaded yet again in 903 and were finally defeated for good four years later (Taaffe). This conflict resulted in the "final establishment of Saxon supremacy" as well as destroying most individual kingdoms (Taaffe). Alfred "made Wessex a rallying point for all the Saxons and by freeing the country of the invaders unwittingly unified England and prepared the way for the eventual supremacy of his successors" (Taaffe). Under Alfred, citizens for the first time began to think of themselves as belonging first to a nation, not to a smaller kingdom. Religion: The Danish raids had heavily damaged the monasteries, but "Alfred reinvigorated them as centers of religion and education" (Somerville). When the Danes destroyed them, they also destroyed the "intellectual fervor that had placed England in the forefront of European scholarship" ("English and Its Historical Development"). From this its easy to see how closely entwined religion and education were at this time.
