Superficially, it would seem that nonprofit organizations and public-sector organizations operate in much the same way. They each have ongoing and basic needs to give concerted attention to issues of operations, including business activity, staffing, funding, housing and maintaining a public presence. In these issues they differ little from organizations operating in the private sector, where the greatest difference is that funding arrives in the form of successful business effort translated from revenues of sales of either goods or services. Superficially, it would seem that nonprofit organizations and public-sector organizations operate in much the same way. They each have ongoing and basic needs to give
concerted attention to issues of operations, including business activity, staffing, funding, housing and maintaining a public presence. In these issues they differ little from organizations operating in the private
sector, where the greatest difference is that funding arrives in the form of successful business effort translated from revenues of sales of either goods or services.
While it is true that nonprofits and the public sector share common operational issues, the manner in which they approach those issues can vary greatly. The
greatest difference lies in their sources of revenue, but there are other operational differences as well. The Nonprofit Organization In order to be
a "serious" nonprofit organization, the organization must qualify for and maintain the 501(c)(3) status that provides its exemption from federal income tax. States also have their own requirements for
tax-exempt status, but federal regulations typically supersede state requirements. When the nonprofit maintains 501(c)(3) status, donations from individuals and other organizations are deductible to those donors.
The term "nonprofit" does not mean that the nonprofit organization seeks not to make money from its operations, but rather that after all of its expenses
are paid it returns all proceeds from operations to the cause for which the organization exists (What is a Nonprofit Organization, n.d.). Depending on the type of nonprofit organization
