Operating in 170 countries and employing more than 386,000 people, IBM offers services including business consulting, software and hardware, fundamental research, component technologies and financing (Datamonitor, 2008). The majority of the companys products and services are related to advanced information technology (Datamonitor, 2008). The company operates through five segments: global technology services, global business services, systems and technology group, software, and global financing (Datamonitor, 2008). Global technology services and global business services are organized under the Global Group umbrella. Global services provides IBM software and hardware and other supplier products to its clients (Datamonitor, 2008). Systems and technology offers IBM clients systems and solutions with advanced storage capabilities and computing power (Datamonitor, 2008). Approximately 55% of the systems are through business partners, while 45% are sold direct to end-user clients, and more than 40% are distributed through the companys Internet portal, ibm.com (Datamonitor, 2008). The companys software segment is made up of middleware and operating systems software (Datamonitor, 2008). Middleware helps clients integrate systems and applications over a standard software platform (Datamonitor, 2008).
