How would socio-cultural forces such as religion, culture, education and labor practices impact the success (or lack of success) in Japan? One thing that is obvious on the surface is that the Japanese labor force is much different from that of the United States. One can see this clearly, just by examining Geert Hofestedes cultural dimensions. The general overview shows the Power Distance Index of 50, the Individuality Index at 40, the Masculinity Index and Uncertainty Avoidance Indexes hovering around 90 and Long-Term Orientation Index at 85 (Hofstede, 2009). Lets compare this to the United States, in which the Power Distance Index is 35, Individuality Index is 85, Masculinity Index is around 60 and Uncertainty Avoidance is 40 (Hofstede, 2009). Long-Term Orientation is at a low of 25. What we can take from this is that the Japanese culture (and by extension, its workforce) is diametrically opposed to that of the U.S. The Japanese is a team culture, one that believes in submerging self for the team, and one that believes the long-term attributes of family, culture, truth and virtue are more important than earning of the quick buck. Relationships in Japan are hugely important - to build a KFC team in that country takes making friends before ahead of getting the job done. Also, due to Japans high masculinity ratio, one will see women in the workforce, but very few taking management jobs.
