Young killers are boys and girls, and range in age from approximately five to the legal limit of 18. Some kill singly and for their own reasons; others kill
for their place in a group, such as a gang, or with others as accomplices. The factors which create young killers are as varied as they are. Nevertheless, experts
generally place the blame on (1) biological factors, such as learning disabilities, testosterone, and fetal alcohol syndrome, (2) psychological factors, such as alcohol and drug use, low self esteem, and
personality disorders, and (3)environmental factors, such as abusive homes, single parent families, urban poverty, ready access to guns, and influence of television and rock music, and (4) societal factors, such
as glorification of violence, competition, and the general culture of violence in America. Throughout the literature, however, the themes of poverty, social class, American competitiveness, and lack of empathy
in our youth for others are repeatedly sounded (Kinnear 2). There have been an number of statistical studies on juvenile crime, but few have focussed solely on homicide. All
of them, however, find that juvenile violence is increasing in both size and seriousness of the crimes. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, between 1987
and 1991, the number of Violent Crime Index arrests for murder increased by 85 percent, compared with 21 percent for those 18 or older. Of the 122,900 arrests of juveniles
in 1991, which was the highest number in history, 3400 were for murder and 68,700 were for aggravated assault. Of the murders committed by juveniles, approximately one-third had juvenile
victims. Guns were the main means of committing these murders, and from 1987 to 1991, the increase in gun-related homicides rose from 64 percent to 78 percent. This
