is a widely read story about one boy who has a horrible day, as the title suggests. It is a story that adults clearly enjoy reading, even if they do not have children, because it is just so universally true. Everyone has a bad day, adults and children alike. And, as adults we can look back at such days in our childhood and realize that they were funny, even if they were hard. This is because they are very real days. Viorst clearly meant for children to relate to the book and adults to enjoy reading the book. And the story is understood by both parents and children in a very real and universal way. The strongest element in this book that speaks to both children and adults, and gets the point of Alexanders bad day across, is humor. Both children and adults can laugh at the day that Alexander has because it is funny, while being so truthfully tragic. The following paper examines the humor in Viorsts book, arguing that it is the key to the story and the key that connects adult and child. Alexanders Day and Humor The story of Alexander opens with the following line: "I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now theres gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day" (Viorst).
