the original Spanish" (Gray, 1962, p. xv). However, while Grays work is scholarly, his writing style is also accessible and easily comprehended by a general reading audience, which makes his
text ideal as an introduction to the life and historical significance of Jose Marti, and why he is a Cuban national hero. Grays focus is on Marti as
a charismatic leader. The first section of the book offers a brief biography, as well as a detailed overview of Martis ideas regarding society, politics and the Cuban economy. The
second section of the book traces Martis transition and development to the status of national hero. In this section, Gray explains how and why Marti came to be regarded as
the "ideal Cuban," as well as the reaction of the Roman Catholic Church to this designation (Gray, 1962, p. xv). The third section addresses Martis role as a symbol political
symbol and the how his ideas were used to engender popular support for revolutionary action. The final chapters examine the role that Martis legacy has played in Cuban politics by
