His development completely altered the theory that was in place at the time he began his work. This paper explains both of those theories and also provides the experimental basis for the new theoretical development of atomic theory. EARLY ATOMIC THEORY The concept of atomic theory began as early as 400 B.C. when Democritus proposed that the world was made up of only empty space and tiny particles. He bestowed the name of atoms upon these tiny particles, but had no proof as to their existence. Later on, in approximately 330 B.C. Aristotle refuted this concept and argued that the world was made up of continuous matter and was not composed of smaller particles. Aristotle called his theory and the matter of which it was composed Hyle. This theory was held until the 17th century, at which time Isaac Newton and Robert Boyle again made popular the theory of tiny atomic particles. HOW DALTONS THEORY ALTERED EARLY THEORY John Dalton, a British chemist as well as a physicist, first worked with meteorological theories. It was through this series of study that Dalton got interested in the instruments used to measure the weather as well as the theories behind meteorology. It was through this study that the first theory was brought forth that proved rain is first "precipitated by a decrease in temperature, not by change in atmospheric pressure" (John ...
