the criminal mind and crime causation. These theories tend to benefit from one on one application with known criminals and their deviant acts. Of all the atrocious crimes committed in the twentieth century those committed by Jeffrey Dahmer could be contended to be the most useful in terms of providing comparisons in crime causation theory. While Dahmer is one of the most memorable criminals, his crimes were far from ordinary. Neither was his childhood and the events leading up to the most gruesome of his crimes. Indeed, Dahmers life provides an excellent point of illustration for a discussion on what causes criminals to act in the manner that they act. The more abhorrent the crime, it seems, the most interesting the behavioral factors behind it. One has only to glance at the volume of articles that were produced by popular press at the time Dahmers acts were discovered to realize the extent of the societal recoil that occurred. Those same articles provide primary accounts of Dahmer and his madness. Dahmers name is now practically synonymous with deviancy and even cannibalism. Jeffrey Dahmer has left behind a criminal legacy that hopefully will never be equaled. His perverse activities spanned a thirteen year period but his memory will last on into future generations. Once apprehended and tried, he was actually convicted of killing and dismembering fifteen men and boys. The actual number, however, is known to be larger than that and it is quite likely that the true number of victims was indeed much larger.
