Introduction The first thing the student writing about Martin Scorceses 1980 portrayal of Jake La Motta in "Raging Bull" is that Jake La Motta, as portrayed by Robert DeNiro (who won an academy award for his work) was every bit as wildly angry in his real life as was the portrayal DeNiro and Scorcese presented. The well-known movie critic Leonard Maltin wrote in his plot summary of the movie (part of Maltins massive film and video guide) that the movie was an: "Extraordinarily compelling look at prizefighter Jake La Motta, whose leading opponent outside the ring was always himself" (PG). In comparison, Thomson (1998) describes La Motta and the movie as "foul-mouthed, lace-breaking, conscientiously misanthropic" (pp. 55). The student researching "Raging Bull" and the life of Jake La Motta is certain to discover that such a character, who actually has something of a heart, was certain to make a powerful subject for a director like Scorcese and an actor such as DeNiro. Based on La Mottas autobiography, the student working on this project will have to wonder if the movie didnt show much more of the man than La Motta had ever intended.
