Numerous issues can arise in the educational setting regarding student interaction and self concept. This is particularly true for adolescents it seems. One case study (Case Study One) involving a fifteen year old girl (Sam) who was particularly sensitive about how other students perceived her illustrates just how poor self concept can be a distracter in the classroom setting. Indeed, the literature is replete with reports who have correlated productivity with moral and self concept. Fitts (1972) terms this hypothesis as "the more optimal the self concept the more effective the individual will function". Although Sam is intelligent and academically capable, her obsession with other students perceptions of her has reached the degree that it does not allow her to focus on her studies. In one instance, for example, Sam was answering the teachers call to come to the front of the classroom and work out a math problem on the board. On her trip to the front she tripped and landed face down. She was not physically hurt but was emotionally scarred with a few of the students laughed. Most of the students did not even see Sam trip but, typical to Sam, the fear immediately enveloped her that she would be the laughing stock of the school for weeks to come because of her clumsiness. This fear might seem innocent on first consideration but when it reaches this degree of emotional impact it is a problem not just in the academic setting but in the societal setting as a whole. ...
