Parents who do not make a direct emotional and physical connection with their children, coupled with utilizing the television as a built-in babysitter, are setting them up for significant problems as they grow up. Virtually since its inception, the debate over quality childrens television programming has raged between parents and broadcast networks; while public television has displayed significantly more interest in telecasting a higher quality of educational programming, commercial broadcast networks have not typically followed suit with regard to enlightened choices. Sitting in front of the television for an average of three hours a day sets the stage for less and less social interaction outside of the home. The dependable, safe element exuded by the all-too-familiar television screen creates a comfort zone for children that is both numbing and dangerous; their ability to interact with others stagnates amidst a two-dimensional relationship, while their impression of the world around them is steeped in violence and materialism. II. TV AND AGGRESSION Aggression is not an uncommon side effect of televisions assault on the senses, found particularly evident with teenagers. Television is responsible for introducing its young viewers to images they might not experience except through the miracle of technological advancement. The time that teens spend in front of the television is certainly enough to warrant concern over what the impressionable youths are ingesting through their subconscious psyche. Coupled with the myriad physiological changes that occur during this time in an adolescents life, his or her propensity toward violence due to negative television influence is particularly critical. ...
