find themselves stranded on an island. They are two very different characters, yet both seem to have the same sort of resiliency and stability as they face isolation on their islands. The following paper examines the significance of the islands in the stories, examining their isolation and reconnection with humanity. Island Locations in The Tempest and Robinson Crusoe In the case of Prospero, in Shakespeares work, he was a Duke and a man of power. He was essentially sent off into the sea with his daughter aboard a boat that was clearly expected to fall apart: "In few, they hurried us aboard a bark, Bore us some leagues to sea; where they prepared A rotten carcass of a boat, not riggd, Nor tackle, sail, nor mast; the very rats Instinctively had quit it" (Shakespeare I ii). They found themselves on an island and there he, and his daughter, have lived for many years. In the case of Crusoe he experienced a similar situation wherein he also found himself on an island, although his circumstances were different. He was not sent their purposefully but experienced a storm and a shipwreck which landed him, alone, on an island. He was not sent off to die but rather became a victim of nature and fate it would seem. Prior to becoming stranded on the island Prospero was a successful and powerful man. In fact he was so successful that his brother began to make plans to get rid of him because of his jealousy of Prospero. In the situation and persona of Prospero he tells his daughter that at the time he was beginning to become incredibly involved in reading and learning, thus ultimately isolating ...
