Once viewed as a means of supporting the education of the underprivileged, financial aid has become a necessity for even middle class and upper middle class students. This study considers
the nature of financial aid, including both need-based and merit-based allocations of funding, as well as the use of different payment options on the college/university level. This research study
is designed to assess the impacts of financial assistance in order to determine what impact it has on the retention of post-secondary students. The survey incorporated in this research
study assesses what impact financial aid services and alternative payment options have on a population of active and inactive students at Thomas Edison State College. The study of this
population shows that adequate financial aid and the use of alternative financing options on the college level have the potential to reduce drop-out rates. INTRODUCTION For decades,
students throughout the nation have depended upon financial aid to support their pursuit of increasingly costly college educations. Students in a variety of socioeconomic situations have filed for and
received financial aid support, including both merit-based and need-based financial aid. Though many students assert that educational quality is one of the first priorities in the selection of the
colleges and universities to which they apply, cost and financial aid quickly move to the top of the list when determining which educational institution a student will attend. In
correlation, the decision to leave college after attending a year or more is commonly the result of financial pressures and the inability to meet the financial commitment of a four
