By 2005, the consumer component on the Internet is expected to be worth more than $600 billion (Berman, 2000). Investors collective love affair with anything ending in "dot com" generally is over. Today, businesses have to be on their way to profitability in the near term or have already arrived in order to gain Wall Streets favor, and many of those successful now have determined that the surest route to follow is that of the old principles of consumer behavior and other marketing principles. The Ever-changing Internet Environment In earlier days, marketers simply went for the attention of everyone they could find, even practicing email spamming to get their messages to online consumers. Internet service providers (ISPs) now will block access of those about which they have received only a few complaints, and of course it is not marketers intent to alienate those populations to which they are attempting to promote products or services. Throwing advertisements at every place a space exists no longer is seen to be the path of the wise. One online reservations service was criticized by investment bankers for making a profit so early in its life, but there is a growing realization that evaluation of Internet businesses ultimately will be accomplished in the same manner that any analyst assesses a business.
