values. It is an important tenant of practically all of our ideologies and actions. That is true whether we are considering integrity from an individual or an organizational perspective. The U.S. Army is just one of many organizations to emphasize the importance of integrity in everything from basic training to leadership and supervision. The Association of the United States Army (2005) defines integrity as: "doing whats right, legally and morally". The recent convictions of soldiers that waivered from this definition are an emphasis on the importance of following that definition and striving to emphasize morality in everything we do. For whatever reason, those soldiers that were convicted of prisoner abuse at Abu Grhraib prison allowed their integrity to falter. It is important to point out, however, that it was not only these particular soldiers that at least temporarily lost their integrity. Evidence of prisoner abuse at the facility surfaced in January 2004 when a U.S. Army soldier, Sergeant Joseph Darby, provided photographic evidence of that abuse to his superiors. As horrific as the problem was, it can be contended that a series of critical decisions spanning back well into U.S. policy and, indeed, to international law on terrorism. Starting with the August 1, 2002 so-called "torture memo" regarding the interrogation techniques that were considered appropriate for al Queda and Taliban detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Prison Camp our government began to explore the complex issues of terrorism and in so doing began to operate less on integrity than on achieving an objective regardless of the steps that had to ...
